Late Regency sarcophagus. Mahogany and lead lined , wine cooler/cellarette

A handsome mid-Victorian walnut blanket chest of excellent colour and proportion, dating to the third quarter of the 19th century.

The chest features a rectangular hinged lift-top opening to reveal a spacious interior, ideal for the storage of linens, blankets or clothing. The front is decorated with a well-proportioned moulded panel set within a clean architectural frame, raised on a simple plinth base which gives the piece weight and presence.

The walnut veneer displays an attractive warm tone with pleasing grain throughout, complemented by a natural aged patina. A central escutcheon to the front suggests the original locking mechanism (key not confirmed unless present).

Of restrained yet elegant design, this piece would sit comfortably in both traditional and contemporary interiors — equally suitable at the foot of a bed, in a hallway, or as a practical storage chest in a sitting room.

A solid and honest Victorian example offering both functionality and decorative appeal.
